Angels Top Prospects for 2016
OF Andrew Benintendi (BOS) Grade A-: Age 21, 2015 first round pick from University of Arkansas, destroyed NCAA this past spring and clobbered pro pitching too, hitting .313/.416/.556 in debut, 11 homers, 10 steals, 35 walks, just 24 strikeouts in 198 at-bats. Power, speed, plate discipline, contact, defense, all stand out. He’s just 5-10 but fewer and fewer people care about that given athleticism, strength, bat speed, eye.
OF Nomar Mazara (TEX) Grade A-: Age 20, hit .296/.366/.443 with 14 homers, 52 walks, 102 strikeout in 490 at-bats in Double-A/Triple-A. Thrived against older competition, has cleaned up swing over the last two years and developed pure hitting skills to go with raw power that he still hasn’t fully tapped; has quietly developed into a very good corner outfielder as well. Draws raves for makeup. You can make a case to put him ahead of Gallo.
LHP Blake Snell (TBR) Grade B+: Age 22, posted 3.19 ERA with 119/56 K/BB in 116 innings in A-ball. Live arm with low-90s fastball, shows good potential with both slider and change-up, biggest issue remains spotty command. Upside: number three starter with middle relief or LOOGYdom as backup options.
LHP Brian Johnson (BOS) Grade B-/B: Age 24, typical finesse lefty with good pitchability, posted 2.53 ERA with 90/32 K/BB in 96 innings in Triple-A, made one major league start then went down with elbow injury. Features curve, change, cutter, good track record when healthy.
RHP C.J. Edwards (ChC) Grade B-: Age 24, 2.77 ERA with 75/41 K/BB in 55 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, just 26 hits allowed. Too many walks but stuff fits perfectly in the bullpen, 93-97 MPH with movement, curve and change both strong. Stock down some now that he is a reliever but can close games eventually if the walks come down.
SS Jose Rondon (SDP) Grade B-: Age 20, acquired from Angels in Huston Street trade, hit combined .315/.363/.404 in the California League. Good defensive rep, can hit for average, young, main question will be power development. If he can manage gap power he could be a very solid regular.
RHP Kodi Medeiros (MIL) Grade B-: Age 19, 4.44 ERA with 94/40 K/BB in 93 innings in Low-A, 79 hits. Other sources like him better than I do, so your mileage may vary. 2014 first-rounder, lively fastball and slider and gets grounders but command needs work and has not pitched up to his reputation yet. Very young of course.
RHP Victor Alcantara, Grade C+/B-: Age 22, fireballer can hit 97-98, posted 5.63 ERA with 125/58 K/BB in 136 innings in High-A, 152 hits. Slider is plus when he is going well, change-up and command still need work, many see him as a reliever but the Angels will develop him as a starter as long as possible. High upside, high risk.
RHP Chris Ellis, Grade C+/Borderline B-: Age 22, third round pick from University of Mississippi, 6.89 ERA with 16/8 K/BB in 16 innings in Pioneer League. Scouting reports better than the early stats, hard sinker and slider, change-up okay, strikeout rate was low in college but higher as a pro. Many see mid-rotation arm but my guess is that he winds up as a reliever.
RHP Chris Stratton (SFG) Grade C+: Age 24, former Mississippi State ace and 2012 first round pick has seen his stock slip, didn’t have a great year in Cal League (5.07 ERA, 102/36 K/BB in 99 innings, 103 hits) and hasn’t lived up to expectations, but still has a shot at back-of-the-rotation duty.
2B Chris Bostick (Nats) Grade C+: Age 21, acquired in trade with Rangers, hit .251/.322/.412 with 11 homers, 24 steals, 47 walks, 116 strikeouts in 495 at-bats in High-A. Needs to tighten up defense as well as strike zone, but could become a multi-category contributor if he can handle Double-A.
RHP Bobby Wahl (A's) Grade C+: Age 22, posted 4.89 ERA with 62/25 K/BB in 53 innings in A-ball, fastball/slider type hasn’t lived up to expectations since being a projected first-rounder in 2013. He ended up going in the fifth round after junior year blister trouble. Picks up strikeouts but command needs work and long-term role unclear.
1B/OF Alex Dickerson (SDP) Grade C+: Age 24, hit .321/.367/.496 in 34 games in Double-A in injury-shortened season. Lacks great tools but has a long track record of good hitting dating back to college. Probably not quite enough homer power for a modern first baseman but should find a role somewhere.
RHP Kyle McGowin, Grade C+: Age 23, posted 2.93 ERA with 48/16 K/BB in 58 innings in High-A, limited by elbow injury although surgery avoided. Low-90s heat, very good slider, decent change-up, usually throws strikes, number four projection or a middle reliever if durability remains an issue.
INF Roberto Baldoquin, Grade C+: Age 20, signed out of Cuba this month, scouting reports indicate a middle infielder with more power than typical for the position, however reports on pure hitting skills, strike zone judgment, defensive projection vary from source to source. I’ve watched the same videos as everyone else and read the same reports and he is tough to rank until we see him in spring training. Could be anything, star to sub. Consider this a placeholder grade pending more information.
RHP Jeremy Rhoades, Grade C+: Age 22, fourth round pick out of Illinois State in 2014, posted 4.42 ERA with 40/15 K/BB in 39 innings in Pioneer League. Sense a theme here? Low-90s fastball, good slider, some success as both starter and reliever in college but most likely a bullpen guy in pro ball, could advance quickly if command holds.
LHP Nate Smith Grade C/Borderline C+: Age 23, eighth round pick in 2013 out of Furman, 2.97 ERA with 118/44 K/BB in 118 innings between High-A and Double-A. Solid performer thus far though in-person reports emphasize lack of stuff. Best pitch is change-up, small margin for error but could be a surprise four/five starter.
LHP Tyler DeLoach, Grade C: Age 23, posted 2.99 ERA with 161/66 K/BB in 147 innings between High-A and Double-A. Despite impressive K/IP ratio he doesn’t burn radar guns, relying on deception, funky arm angles and changes of speed. Like Nate Smith his margin for error is thin but he has a chance.
3B Zach Houchins, Grade C: Age 23, 13th round pick in 2014 from East Carolina, hit .253/.313/.401 with 14 homers, 39 walks, 67 strikeouts in 494 at-bats in Low-A. Nothing special here on the surface at all, but drew impressive reviews for defense at third base, can also play shortstop without embarrassing himself, and has some power with a low strikeout rate. Type of guy who could have a "breakout" season in the Cal League, bears watching at least. I felt I should point him out: you could put most of the "others" in this spot if you wanted to.
