old contract: $7,000,000 (2014)
new offer: 3 yrs @ $6,250,000
the OF market has been pretty much established in discussions in the other threads. Melky is above Pagan yet below Jones, Gordon, Martin and Gardner

He's definitely better than Martin and probably on par with Gordon. I'm looking for Gordon money.

Seeing as its past the deadline thus no more attempts after we vote on this final re-sign I am going to give Cards a chance to make sure this is the one and only attempt he has to make at this price or if he wants to change it.

Year after year Gordon's numbers are better than Cabrera's so there is no need to offer Gordon money. I'll stick with my offer of $6.25M, Gardner had more power and speed than Melky last year therefore the reason I offered slightly less than the $6.5M that was approved
Alex Gordon 2011: .303, 23HR, 87RBI, 17SB 2012: .294, 14HR, 72RBI, 10SB 2013: .265, 20HR, 81RBI, 11SB 2014: .266, 19HR, 74RBI, 12SB
Melky Cabrera 2011: .305, 18HR, 87RBI, 20SB 2012: .346, 11HR, 60RBI, 13SB 2013: .279, 3HR, 30RBI, 2SB 2014: .301, 16HR, 73RBI, 6 SB

I am going to approve. I think Gordon is clearly better than Melky.

Approval #2 (2-1)
"Melky is above Pagan yet below Jones, Gordon, Martin and Gardner" this is essentially correct and the basis for my approval. The other issues (tumors, PEDs) I'm sure have factored into the Cards reasoning when making the offer, but in terms of production the money is close enough.

I was looking at this and saw "Gardner had more power and speed than Melky last year therefore the reason I offered slightly less than the $6.5M that was approved"
If I look at last year only I'm seeing this:
Melky Cabrera 2014: .301avg, .808ops, 81r, 16HR, 73RBI, 6SB
Brett Gardner 2014: .256avg, .749ops, 87r, 17hr, 58rbi, 21sb
I'm just seeing Melky above Gardner based on that. I can't see how he places below him. I see the Gardner SB edge, but HR's and Runs are right together, but AVG, OPS & RBI's go to Melky.
One note about Gordon's 7.25M contract is it was a 5 year deal which normally gets a lower average annual salary. Going by the 4 year numbers for Gordon & Melky, (I added the Runs and OPS), I guess I can see slotting Melky in right below Gordon, but I'm having a hard time figuring how to put him beneath Gardner.
Alex Gordon 2011: .303avg, .879ops, 101r, 23HR, 87RBI, 17SB 2012: .294avg, .822ops, 93r, 14HR, 72RBI, 10SB 2013: .265avg, .749ops, 90r, 20HR, 81RBI, 11SB 2014: .266avg, .783ops, 87r, 19HR, 74RBI, 12SB
Melky Cabrera 2011: .305avg, .809ops, 102r, 18HR, 87RBI, 20SB 2012: .346avg, .906ops, 84r, 11HR, 60rbi , 13SB 2013: .279avg, .682ops, 39r, 3HR, 30RBI, 2SB 2014: .301avg, .808ops, 81r, 16HR, 73RBI, 6SB

Approved 3-2
Personally I don't think Melky is a guy that anyone should be using a resign on. I could easily see him having a horrible first half of the season and becoming a platoon or 4th OF the second half. Plus you never know when the PED thing might happen again.
I look at resign guys as being no brainers or people you think you can gamble on by getting cheap because they haven't broken out yet. (see a bad gamble by me with Brandon Morrow) But predictably average guys like Melky are a waste of a resign.
With that said if someone wants to use a resign on a guy like Melky so be it. I think the money is fine.
