Sickels Grades ( as the become available )
1) Henry Owens, LHP, Grade B+: Walk rate in Double-A was the only negative here, but the overall package looks like a sound number three starter to me, perhaps more.
2) Blake Swihart, C, Grade B: Only thing he hasn’t done yet is hit for power, but scouts seem to think that will come. Impressive glove, makes contact, controls zone well. Even without big power he can still be a regular.
3)Domminic Smith(Mets), 1B, Grade B: Borderline B-. We’ll have to see about the power, but some sources I trust are enthralled with his pure hitting skills. The obvious comp here is James Loney as a line drive hitter with a strong glove but atypical first base power. When these types of first basemen max out, they are Keith Hernandez. When they don’t, they get stuck in Triple-A.
4) Daniel Norris( Tor ), LHP, Grade B: I had him as a B- a year ago despite a rough ’12 season, so a more effective ’13 moves him up a notch. Chance to be a four-pitch starter if his command continues to sharpen.
5) Sean Nolin(Tor), LHP, Grade B: Aside from his bad spot start in the majors, he had another strong year. I had him as a Grade B pre-season and he pitched well enough in Double-A/Triple-A to maintain that. He doesn’t have the ceiling of Sanchez, Stroman, or Norris, but he’s deceptive enough to be a major league starter, at least a #4.
6) Matt Barnes, RHP, Grade B-: Borderline B. Another guy right on the edge area between two grades. Webster, Workman, and Barnes could be ranked in any order you like with completely sound logic behind the decision. All could be mid-rotation starters if they fully pan out, or very useful relievers.
7) Rosell Herrera, SS-3B, Grade B: Borderline B-. Do not be deceived by .343 average at Asheville. There are a lot of questions here: can he play shortstop? Will the bat be enough if he moves to third base? Will his strike zone judgment hold up against better pitching? At the same time it is possible to be too skeptical, and he did show a broad array of potential talents last year. But he is more solid prospect than future star in my view
8) Luke Jackson(TEX), RHP, Grade B-: Borderline B. I’ve liked him since he was drafted out of high school in 2010, so with a strong season under his belt I have to stick with it. Some good luck backed up his 0.67 ERA in 27 Double-A innings, but he maintained a good strikeout pace. Command and changeup need additional refinement but I think he can be a solid starter, or perhaps more dominant in relief.
9) Aaron Blair(ARI), RHP, Grade B: Supplemental first rounder from Marshall pairs nicely with Shipley at top of ’13 draft class. I like Shipley a bit better since I think his secondary pitches are more refined, but there’s nothing wrong with Blair, who could also develop into a number three starter.
10) Akeem Bostick, RHP, Grade B-: Super-athletic 2013 second round pick looked great in rookie ball by all accounts, fastball well into the 90s and curveball/changeup secondaries show potential. Will need time but has plenty of upside, could be top pitching prospect in the system in a year or two.
11) Hunter Green, LHP, Grade B-: Borderline C+: The B- is probably generous and I may go down to C+. I like his arm strength and projectability, and the 2013 second-rounder has the highest upside arm in the system. He also had command problems in rookie ball, so don’t expect a rapid advancement.
12) John Stilson(Tor), RHP, Grade C+: Looks like he’s ready for a full major league bullpen trial. Should be a solid relief asset and might get a shot at closing down the line
13)Chase DeJong(Tor), RHP, Grade C+: Another solid performer at Bluefield, 3.05 ERA with 66/10 K/BB in 56 innings with low-90s fastball and good curve. And another breakout candidate; the Jays should have a really intriguing rotation in Low-A this year.
14)LeVon Washington, OF, Grade C+: Injury-plagued outfielder quietly hit .348/.444/.552 in 61 games between doctor’s visits last year. Seems like he is falling off the radar, but his hitting skills are intact and he is still just 22. I’d rank him as high as sixth if I was more certain of his health. Not injured yet this year and hitting .318/.400/.500 in High-A. Do not sleep on this one.
15) Drake Britton, LHP, Grade C+: Seems like he’ll make a fine bullpen lefty and ready now.
16) Simon Mercedes, RHP, Grade C+: From this point on, you can rank the C+ guys however you like with solid reasoning behind it. Mercedes seems like a guy who can really take off next year, if reports from NY-P are any indication. Role is uncertain but arm strength is not.
17) Deven Marrero, SS, Grade C+: Defense-first guy, although he also uses his speed very well. Fits the contact-hitting-infielder- who-might-surprise-with-the-bat-someday profile.
18) Jamie Callahan, RHP, Grade C+: Like Stankiewicz, he has the physical attributes of a solid starting pitcher but needs to prove himself in full-season ball.
19 ) Luis Cessa, RHP, Grade C+: You can make a case for him at 14, but that’s true for all these C+ pitchers. Another great set of Savannah numbers (3.12 ERA, 124/19 K/BB in 130 innings) but with a sharp home/road split. Fastball reportedly in the mid-90s and has a good changeup but with breaking ball issues that need to be addressed.
20) Trevor Williams(MIA), RHP, Grade C: Arizona State product is another groundballer, posted 2.38 ERA with 24/8 K/BB in 34 innings in pro debut with 2.24 GO/AO. Strikeout rates were low in college but will grounders compensate?
Other C+/C : Angel Villalona , 1B ( giants ) ; Dan McGrath, LHP; Dan Butler, C, 2B; Rafael Devers, 3B; Luis Diaz, RHP; Sergio Gomez, RHP; Joe Gunkel, RHP; Dalier Hinojosa, RHP; Cody Kukuk, LHP; Corey Littrell, LHP; Myles Smith, RHP ; Matt Dean, 1B ( Tor); Freddy Rodriguez, OF ( Tor )
