Nationals trade: Edinson Volquez - $9,500,000 (2016) Jake Thompson - Prospect 2014 PYPD First Round Pick
Giants trade: C.J. Wilson - $14,500,000 (2014) Chris Denorfia - $500,000 (2014) LaTroy Hawkins $1,000,000 (2014)
Nats accept. Gives me another very good starter, a nice bench piece in my not-so-deep outfield, and a closer that I covet. Giving up the first round pick was the big loss, but I believe in my ability to draft and I think I will find some talent in the second and third rounds. An underlying factor in accepting this is that it gives me a little more payroll flexibility after the season which will be very nice to have.

All contracts and team ownership checks out as the salaried players were all free agent adds. The ownership of the prospect is good also. Nats do have the available cap space to take on the extra 6.5 million coming his way.
Awaiting Giants confirmation.

Giants accept. All three players I traded are free agents after the season is over and I would rather get something than nothing for them. I really like Thompson and I have quite a few players I like in this year's draft and the pick gives me more flexibility in my master draft board. I had to take on Volquez contract to make the trade work but I save up money this year while sacrificing future flexibility which I am okay in doing.

I can certainly see risks involved on both sides of this trade. I can also see the potential rewards for each side. Depending on how you look at it I don't think one side outweighs the other by much. Hawkins is the designated Rockies closer but that in itself is a scary thought. Volquez who is signed for longer signed with Pittsburgh who have an uncanny knack recently for fixing pitchers. (AJ Burnett, Mark Malancon, Charlie Morton, Liriano) CJ Wilson would probably be the only sure thing amount the major league players, but a nice prospect and a first round pick are coming the Giants way. And the Giants will have 6.5M of extra money to play around with this year.
