2012 Top Prospects By Sickels
1) Jake Odorizzi, RHP, Grade B+: (KC) He has been a favorite of mine for three years and I see no reason to change that opinion, although he needs to work a bit lower in the zone
2) Daniel Norris, LHP, Grade B+: (Tor) Higher physical ceiling than Nicolino, but I want to see him in pro ball before ranking him ahead.
3) Chad Bettis, RHP, Grade B: (Col) Borderline B+. 95 MPH sinker and a nasty slider were too much for California League hitters. Still working on curveball and changeup, preventing B+ at this time, but I like him a lot. Could be a number three starter or possibly a closer.
4) Phillippe Aumont, RHP, Grade B-: (Phi) Command still needs some work, but between Aumont and De Fratus there are two potential closers here.
5) A.J. Pollock, OF, Grade B-: (Ari) Main question here is if he will develop more home run power, but he has a broad range of skills and is fully recovered from the 2010 elbow injury.
6) Matt Dominguez, 3B, Grade B-: Glove looks terrific, both on paper and in person. He has some power, but is not going to hit for average and doesn't draw walks. Still young enough to improve, but at this point has more value for a real team than a fantasy one. Comp: Pedro Feliz.
7) Rob Rasmussen, LHP, Grade B-: Slow start last year but pitched better as season progressed. Needs to get the walks down. Projects as number three or four starter.
8) Wilmer Flores, 3B-SS, Grade B-: (NYM) Borderline C+. Still very young at age 20. Switch over to third base increases pressure on his bat. Will he develop sufficient power for that position? He keeps his strikeout rate low but power hasn't blossomed as Mets hoped, granted he was promoted aggressively. Stock is starting to sag but it isn't too late yet.
9) Adam Conley, LHP, Grade B-: I like him, another lefty who could be number three or four starter if his breaking ball improves to match his fastball and changeup. Could return to closing if it doesn't.
10) Aaron Miller, LHP, Grade C+: (LAD) Forgotten man after losing most of the season with a hernia, but he still has solid stuff from the left side and could blossom with better health and some adjustments with his command.
11) Kolbrin Vitek, 3B, Grade C+: (Bos) Didn't hit for power in High-A and defense is rough, but still has one of the better offensive ceilings in the system.
12) Noah Perio, 2B, Grade C+: Line drive hitter with gap power, some speed, athleticism, potential to be a fine defender although he isn't yet, young at age 20. Low walk rate is a hindrance.
13) Mason Hope, RHP, Grade C+: Overshadowed in Oklahoma high school ranks by teammate Arizona first round pick Archie Bradley and Orioles first round pick Dylan Bundy, but this fifth rounder has a live arm and threw strikes in rookie ball. Aggressive ranking but this is a thin system.
14) Jose Ceda, RHP, Grade C+: Age 25 now but still counts as a rookie. Plus velocity, but command issues limit him to middle relief. Could get a shot as a closer if Heath Bell implodes.
15) Charlie Lowell, LHP, Grade C+: Wichita State ace lasted until the sixth round despite second-round buzz pre-draft. Throws hard, command needs some work, but could rank much next year.
16) Kyle Jensen, OF, Grade C+: Fits into the Jerry Sands/Casper Wells category: power bat, good numbers, big guy, scouts have doubts about his swing but has better tools than his reputation. Let's see how he hits in Double-A/Triple-A.
17) Kevin Mattison, OF, Grade C+: Speedy outfielder added to 40-man roster, drew notice after strong Arizona Fall League. Good glove, hustles, plate discipline is spotty and he gets too power-conscious at times, could be good fourth outfielder if he stays within himself, but never hit before this year, which makes me cautious.
18) Grant Dayton, LHP, Grade C+: Fanned 99 in 72 innings in the Sally League. Auburn product throws hard, could move quickly as relief asset.
19) Carlos Peguero, OF, Grade C (Sea) (2016)
20) Bryan Price, RHP, Grade C (Cle)
21) Dustin Richardson, LHP, Grade C (FA)
22) Jose Urena, RHP, Grade C: Throws hard and drew notice from scouts in the New York-Penn League. High ceiling, but secondary pitches need a lot of work and he fanned just 48 in 73 innings.
23) Jesus Solorzano, OF, Grade C: Toolsy type, hit .299 and stole 18 bases in Gulf Coast League. Good glove, needs better plate discipline, power potential draws mixed reviews.
24) Scott Cousins, OF, Grade C: Still a rookie. Average power, average speed, good throwing arm, hits left, perfect fourth/fifth outfield profile.
25) Chris Hatcher, RHP, Grade C: Converted catcher, adapted quickly to mound work, hits mid-90s, still refining secondary stuff but reached majors in first year of full-time pitching.

2013 Top Prospects -- Updated 2/15/2013
1) Mike Zunino, C, Grade A- (Sea): Complete catcher, either the best catching prospect in baseball or second-best behind Travis D'Arnaud. Power, patience, defense, great makeup. Does everything. ETA: 2013-2014
2) Trevor Story, SS, Grade B+ (COL): Borderline A-: I want to see how his contact issues look against better pitching, but overall there are a lot of things to like here. . .power, speed, walks, defense, a complete package if the strikeouts don't eat him up. I don't expect they will. Ranks a bit ahead of Dahl due to defensive premium. ETA: 2015
3) Jake Odorizzi, RHP, Grade B+ (TB): Borderline B. I've always liked Odo, but I do worry about the fly ball tendency becoming a problem. My guess is that he could struggle in the short run, but long-term I still expect him to be a number three starter, and the Rays do a better job developing young pitching than the Royals do. ETA: 2012
4) James Paxton, LHP, Grade B+ (SEA): He still has occasional command troubles but the stuff is first class, love the 92-95 fastball and big-breaking curve. Number two starter upside. Very good season in Double-A (3.05 ERA, 110/54 K/BB in 106 innings). ETA: 2013-2014
5) Wilmer Flores, 3B-2B, Grade B+ (NYM): Borderline B. I am impressed with the progress he made last year developing his power, and he's still just 21. There are still significant questions about his defense and how his bat will fit into a lineup, but progress is progress. ETA: 2014
6) Kyle Crick, RHP, Grade B+ (SFG): There are a few control issues to address, but I'm a big fan of his stuff, size, fresh arm, and San Francisco's track record of developing similar prospects. ETA: 2014-2015
7) Chad Bettis, RHP, Grade B (COL): Missed entire season with shoulder problems. He's a solid Grade B prospect if healthy, as a mid-rotation starter or (more probably) a relief option and potential closer due to his issues with the changeup. Both fastball and slider are plus/plus pitches. ETA: 2014
8) Richie Shaffer, 3B, Grade B (TB): One of my favorite bats in the 2012 draft, refined college hitter with good power and plate discipline. Defense at third base is underrated in my view, though of course he's blocked by Evan Longoria in this organization. Should hit enough to play first base or right field.
9) Josh Bell, OF, Grade B: Borderline B- (PIT): Another difficult grade. Lost almost the entire season to a knee injury, and was having serious strike zone problems before getting hurt. The puzzle here is that his plate discipline/approach/level of polish were supposed to be quite advanced for a high school player. The sample size in Low-A was very small, so is that enough to override the scouting reports? ETA: 2015-2016
10) Heath Hembree, RHP, Grade B- (SFG): Command and injury issues hampered him in Triple-A, but he looked back to normal in the Arizona Fall League. Expect he can help in the bullpen in '13. ETA: 2013
11) Adam Conley, LHP, Grade B-: Good fastball/changeup combination, still working on slider and had some command wobbles in High-A. If that improves, can be a three/four starter or a nice relief option. ETA: 2014-2015
12) Alex Wood, LHP, Grade B- (ATL): Borderline B. Unconventional but it works, had some excellent outings and should move quickly through the system. This grade may go up a notch but I have a couple more things to review first.
13) A.J. Pollock, OF, Grade B- (ARI): Fourth outfielder profile, does a lot of things pretty well, can steal a base, hit for a decent average, play good defense. Won't hit many homers.
14) Nolan Fontana, SS, Grade B- (HOU): Walks walks walks walks. And solid defense too. We'll have to see if the rest of his bat holds up.
12) Jose Urena, RHP, Grade C+: Nice season in Low-A at age 20, 3.38 ERA with 101/29 K/BB in 138 innings. Projectable, still working on secondary pitches but already throws strikes. Mid-rotation upside arm who doesn't get enough attention.
15) Mason Hope, RHP, Grade C+: Competitor of Dylan Bundy and teammate of Archie Bradley in Oklahoma high school ranks is a solid prospect in his own right. Will move up to Low-A in 2013 and breakout season is possible. Another mid-rotation potentiality.
16) Joe Wieland, RHP, Grade C+ (SD) -- Underwent Tommy John Surgery in 2012, Expected Out Til After All-Star Break 2013.
17) Avery Romero, INF, Grade C+: 2012 third round pick has intriguing bat with a nice swing, power potential, good approach at the plate. Might wind up at second or third base, but scouts expect he'll hit. Caution flag: he was one of the oldest guys in the high school class and turns 20 in May.
18) Phillippe Aumont, RHP, Grade C+ (PHI): Seems ready for a full bullpen trial, though command will wobble.
19) Kolby Copeland, OF, Grade C+: Tooled up outfielder with power potential looks like possible steal as supplemental third rounder who got some first round buzz last spring. Reports on bat are positive, and intuitively there's something I like about him that is hard to explain.
20) Charlie Lowell, LHP, Grade C+: Sixth round pick from Wichita State in 2011 has a live arm and dominated the Sally League when he threw strikes. He didn't always throw those strikes, but even marginal improvements will result in a breakout.
21) Grant Dayton, LHP, Grade C+: Outstanding performance record, lefty bullpen arm with good fastball/slider combination, stuff is good enough that he doesn't have to be confined to LOOGY role. Ready to help in next year or two.
22) Tom Koehler, RHP, Grade C+: Veteran minor league inning-chewer posted 13/2 K/BB in first 13 major league innings down the stretch. Older guy at age 26, but I think his stuff is a bit underrated and he could surprise as a four/five starter or reliever.
23) Austin Brice, RHP, Grade C+: Posted 4.35 ERA with 122/68 K/BB in 110 innings in Low-A at age 19/20. Low-to-mid-90s fastball and hard curve result in strong dominance ratios, but needs better command and still working on changeup. Command is erratic but has mid-rotation upside, could plausibly rank as high as 13 or 14.
24) Aaron Miller, LHP, Grade C (LAD)
25) Kolbrin Vitek, 3B, Grade C (Bos)
26) Bryan Price, RHP (CLE)
27) Carlos Peguero, OF (Sea) (2017)

1) Josh Bell, OF-1B, Grade B+/Borderline B (PIT): Age 22, hit .335/.384/.502 in 331 at-bats in High-A then .287/.343/.309 in 94 at-bats in Double-A. Power didn’t carry to Altoona but I think it will come around and he should be a productive hitter. Great throwing arm but foot speed is already declining and moving to first base will increase pressure on the bat.
2) Kyle Crick, RHP, Grade B+ (SFG): Borderline B: Age 22. I have really spent a lot of time on this one. My logical, sober analysis tells me that Crick needs to be a Grade B due to his command issues, but my gut instinct says to go with a Grade B+, which is still a half-step down from the A- I gave him last year. I remain enamored of his strikeout rates and the difficulty hitters have driving his stuff, but yeah, the walks need to come down and there’s a decent chance he winds up in relief. But. . .something holds me back from being quite as skeptical as some analysts have become. Instinct still says he figures it out ultimately.
3) Alex Verdugo, OF, Grade B/Borderline B+ (LAD): Age 18, hit .353/.421/.511 with 20 walks, 18 strikeouts, 11 steals in 11 attempts over 190 at-bats in rookie ball. 2014 second rounder with spectacular debut, many preferred him as a pitcher but Dodgers loved the bat and early results are outstanding, excellent across the board skills and tools in the early going.
4) Trea Turner, SS, Grade B (SD/WAS): Age 21, Padres 2014 first-round pick out of North Carolina State hit .323/.406/.448 with 23 steals in his debut between Northwest and Midwest League. Sound defender and looks like he can hit enough to play regularly. Still with the Padres system officially but everyone knows he will be the "player to be named" in the big trade. It will be interesting to see if they can work out a player loan arrangement until the deal can officially go through in late June.
5) Jose Urena, RHP, Grade B-: Age 23, 3.33 ERA with 121/29 K/BB in 162 innings in Double-A, 155 hits. Low/mid-90s fastball, good change-up, breaking ball still draws mixed reviews but I would not write him off as a starter by any means, although that is apparently a minority view.
6) Nick Burdi, RHP, Grade B- (MIN): Ranking and grading relief prospects is always tough, but Burdi looks like a great bet to be a future closer: he can hit 100 MPH, has a good slider, will toss an occasional change-up, succeeded against good college competition for Louisville, and shows sufficient command to advance quickly. ETA: 2016.
7) Austin Barnes, C-2B, Grade B- (LAD): Age 25, acquired in trade with Marlins, hit .304/.398/.472 between High-A and Double-A, 31 doubles, 13 homers, 69 walks, just 61 strikeouts in 463 at-bats, 11 steals. Older prospect but has always played well, not his fault the Marlins did not promote him as quickly as performance warranted. Good strike zone judgment, surprising pop, solid defensive catcher and a solid second baseman, too. Reputation is growing.
8) Avery Romero, 2B, Grade B-: Age 21, eight days younger than Anderson, hit .320/.367/.420 with five homers in 466 at-bats between Low-A and High-A, good pure hitting skills, not huge power but more pop than typical for a 5-8 player, glove getting better. Lacks range for shortstop.
9) Austin Dean, OF, Grade B-/Borderline C+: Age 21, hit .308/.371/.444 with nine homers, 38 walks, 72 strikeouts in 403 at-bats in Low-A, was 20 last year and slightly young for the Sally League. Scouts worry that arm strength and mediocre speed could make him a tweener but his bat has been steadily improving. I like him more than other people do but he seems like a sleeper to me, if he can tap his power a bit more often which seems plausible.
10) Jarlin Garcia, LHP, Grade C+: Age 22, posted 4.38 ERA with 111/21 K/BB in 134 innings in Low-A, 152 hits. Hittable but interesting, low-90s fastball with assortment of secondary pitches with promise, have to like the K/BB ratio and he is physically projectable.
11) Michael Mader, LHP, Grade C+: Age 21, second round pick out of Chipola Junior College, posted 2.00 ERA with 28/16 K/BB in 45 innings in New York-Penn League. Another low-90s arm, sometimes faster, good curveball, other pitches need work, a fact reflected in low strikeout rate to this point. That said, he may have more broad-based potential than any pitcher in the system not named Kolek.
12) Austin Brice, RHP; Grade C+: Age 22, posted 3.60 ERA with 109/55 K/BB in 127 innings in High-A. Often viewed as future reliever due to erratic command and problems finding a third pitch, but the fastball and curve are impressive and his walk rate showed sharp improvement last year. Some breakout potential remains.
13) Adam Conley, LHP, Grade C+: Age 24, bothered by elbow problems costing him both stuff and command, posted 5.92 ERA with 50/28 K/BB in 65 innings in Double-A/Triple-A, 74 hits. I liked him heading into 2014 but this was not a good year, lost four MPH on fastball and slider deteriorated. Could rebound if healthy but skeptics who projected him as a reliever and not a starter were probably right.
14) Arturo Rodriguez, C, Grade C+: Age 23, signed out of Mexican League where he hit .373/.414/.611 with 15 homers, 20 walks, 50 strikeouts in 324 at-bats for Tijuana, threw out 40% of runners. Very interesting player, this grade and ranking are a placeholder really until we see what he can do this spring. Mexican League is officially classified as Triple-A but is more of a High-A/weak Double-A league strongly tilted to offense.
15) Isael Soto, OF, Grade C/Borderline C+: Age 18, hit .251/.302/.426 with seven homers in GCL last year at age 17, jumping to US without any experience in Dominican Summer League, signed for $310,000 in 2013. Power played well in the big spring training parks, certainly a nice sign. Swing draws praise, strong arm, speed decent, needs tighter strike zone but he performed well considering the circumstances and the tools are intriguing.
16) Nick Wittgren, RHP, Grade C/Borderline C+: Age 23, posted 3.55 ERA with 56/14 K/BB in 66 innings in Double-A, 73 hits, 20 saves. Middle relief profile with low-90s fastball, slider, deceptive delivery.
17) Zach Sullivan, OF, Grade C/Borderline C+: Age 19, hit .280/.389/.398 with nine steals in 10 attempts in Gulf Coast League. The Marlins drafted several toolsy high school outfielders last year: Sullivan out of high school in New York in 14th round, Casey Soltis from California in fifth round, Anfernee Seymour from the Bahamas by way of Florida in the seventh round, Stone Garrett from Texas in the eighth. Sullivan got the least pre-draft attention but showed the best early skills, has power/speed potential and outplayed the guys who were supposed to be more polished.
18) Heath Hembree, RHP, Grade C+ (BOS): Age 26, another part of trade with Giants, 3.72 ERA with 20 saves, 55/18 K/BB in 46 innings in Triple-A. Nothing left to prove in the minors, fastball has declined a bit but slider has improved, should be effective middle reliever.
19) Chasen Shreve, LHP, Grade C+ (NYY)
20) Kevin Ziomek, LHP, Grade C+ (DET): Age 22, former Vanderbilt lefty posted 2.27 ERA, 152/53 K/BB in 123 innings in Low-A. Like Kubitza, he is an experienced college pitcher who was too good for the Midwest League. Upper-80s fastball, workable slider and change-up and will mix in a few curves. Stuff not spectacular but could be a fine number four starter.
21) Trevor Story, SS, Grade C+ (COL): Age 22, strong in High-A (.332/.436/.582 in 184 at-bats) but overmatched badly in Double-A (.200/.302/.380 with 82 strikeouts in just 205 at-bats). Genuine power and runs well (14 homers, 23 steals), decent defender at shortstop but serious contact issues as a hitter.
22) Nolan Fontana, INF, Grade C+ (HOU): Age 23, hit .262/.418/.376 with 61 walks in 66 games in Double-A. Marginal tools with spectacular feel for the game, good defense, excellent eye for getting on base. Should be good utility player.
23) Mallex Smith, OF, Grade C+ (ATL): Age 21, hit .310/.403/.432 with 88 steals, 69 walks, 103 strikeouts in 477 at-bats in A-ball in the Padres system, then traded to Braves. Blazing fast and can work a count, ideal leadoff type if he shows enough pop to keep the pitchers honest at higher levels.
24) Phil Ervin, OF, Grade C+: Age 22, first round pick from 2013, extremely disappointing season in Midwest League, hit .237/.305/.376 with just seven homers, 46 walks, 110 strikeouts in 498 at-bats. He did steal 30 bases in 35 attempts. Was it still due to 2013 wrist problem? Speed and intriguing power potential combination still present but he was not as polished as expected. Too soon to give up of course.
25) Colby Suggs, RHP, Grade C: Age 23, supplemental second round pick in 2013 from University of Arkansas, posted disappointing 5.09 ERA with 47/25 K/BB in 58 innings in High-A. Threw as high as 98 in college, not as hard last year due to some mechanical issues though he pitched better late in the season. Yet another relief arm who could contribute.
26) Elvis Escobar, OF, Grade C (PIT)
27) Alex Balog, RHP, Grade C (COL)
28) Oscar Mercedes, SS, Grade C (STL)
29) Richie Shaffer, 1B, Grade C (TB)
OTHERS: Blake Anderson, C; Justin Bohn, SS; Luis Castillo, RHP; Mason Davis, 2B (sleeper to watch); Grant Dayton, LHP; Brian Ellington, RHP; Kendry Flores, RHP; Stone Garrett, OF; Ben Holmes (Wetzler), LHP; Austin Nola, SS; Viosergy Rosa, 1B; Chris Sadberry, LHP; Anfernee Seymour, OF; Casey Soltis, OF; Sean Townsley, LHP; Justin Twine, SS.

2016 Top Prospects
MLB.com:
N/A
Minor League Ball (Sickels):
1) Alex Verdugo, OF, Grade B+/B (LAD): Age 19, hit .295/.325/.394 in 421 at-bats in Low-A then .385/.406/.659 in 91 at-bats in High-A against considerably older competition. Walk rate down compared to 2014 but strikeout rate remains very low, I think more home run power will come, former pitcher collected 24 outfield assists. I am the high guy on him, others are more skeptical for various reasons. Rated as an aggressive Grade B entering 2015 and I couldn’t just leave him with that grade after a season like this.
2) Mallex Smith, OF, Grade B/B- (ATL): Age 22, stole 57 bases between Double-A and Triple-A hitting combined .306/.373/.386. Lacks home run power but makes contact and uses his blazing speed very well. Optimistic take: Ben Revere/Michael Bourn/Juan Pierre category of player. Pessimistic take: Jarrod Dyson type reserve.
3) Stone Garrett, OF, Grade B-: Age 20, hit .297/.352/.581 in the New York-Penn League, 11 homers, 19 walks, 60 strikeouts in 222 at-bats, led pitching-oriented league in homers and SLG against older competition. Eighth round pick in 2014 made rapid progress, power is genuine, runs well, still working on contact issues. Garrett and Josh Naylor below are the two impact bats in this system. I will admit that putting Garrett ahead of Kolek is a little clickbaity, but see the point below.
4) Nick Burdi, RHP, Grade B-/C+ (MIN): Fireballing reliever struggled with consistency, at times he showed good control (15/3 K/BB in May, 23/0 in July) but still ended up with 32 walks in 44 innings in Double-A, resulting in a 4.53 ERA. Can hit 100, plus slider, but will there be enough strikes? Age 22.
5) Jon Harris, RHP, Grade B-/C+ (TOR): Age 22, 2015 first round pick from Missouri State University, posted 6.75 ERA with 32/21 K/BB in 36 innings, 48 hits in Northwest League. Very disappointing debut, both stuff and command were considerably weaker than college scouting reports indicated. Might have just been tired but stamina was already a question. Mid-rotation arm if he rebounds.
6) Austin Dean, OF, Grade C+: Age 22, hit .268/.318/.366 with five homers, 18 steals, 39 walks, 76 strikeouts in 519 at-bats in High-A. Like teammate Anderson he didn’t meet expectations but still has potential, features more speed on the bases than Anderson but less power and defensive value.
7) Nick Wittgren, RHP, Grade C+: Age 24, posted 3.03 ERA with 64/8 K/BB in 62 innings in PCL, 19 saves, excellent track record as minor league closer with deceptive delivery, low-90s fastball, above-average breaking ball, aggressive attitude. Ready for trial as a middle reliever, one of several the Marlins have who could slot in pen this year.
8) Phillip Ervin, OF, Grade C+ (CIN): Age 23, first round pick in 2013 hasn’t advanced as quickly as expected, hit .241/.346/.379 with 14 homers, 34 steals, 66 walks, 98 strikeouts in 456 at-bats between High-A and Double-A, uses speed well and will draw some walks but power hasn’t blossomed as hoped. Still possible he turns things around.
11) Avery Romero, INF, Grade C+: Age 22, hit .259/.315/.314 in High-A with 38 walks, 71 strikeouts in 455 at-bats. Like Anderson and Dean, his hitting in the Florida State League was disappointing given his past track record but he still has a shot at being a useful role player. Will join them in Double-A lineup.
Dakota Chalmers, RHP, Grade C+ (OAK): Age 19, third round pick in 2015 from high school in Georgia, extremely projectable at 6-3, 175 and already hits mid-90s. Curve has plus potential but command and mechanics are raw. Posted 2.66 in 20 rookie ball innings but with poor 18/17 K/BB. More physical upside than any pitcher on this list except possibly Manaea, but is a long way from reaching that potential. Value accordingly depending on your time horizon.
12) Austin Brice, RHP, Grade C+: Age 23, posted 4.67 ERA with 127/69 K/BB in 125 innings in Double-A. Durable, eats innings, gets his strikeouts with plus curve and fastball that can hit 94, but erratic command continues to hold him back. Would not surprise me to see him thrive in pen.
13) Chris Paddack, RHP, Grade C+: Age 20, eighth round pick in 2015 from high school in Texas, posted 2.18 ERA with 39/7 K/BB in 45 innings in rookie ball. Was supposed to be quite raw but projectable. He’s still projectable at 6-4, 190, but pitchability was much better than advertised, showing excellent change-up and promising curve, sharp control. Aggressive placement here ahead of better-known prospects but seems like a real breakthrough candidate.
14) Isaiah White, OF, Grade C: Age 19, hit .294/.321/.381 with zero homers, 13 steals in 13 attempts, three walks, 44 strikeouts in 126 at-bats in rookie ball. Third round pick from North Carolina high school, very raw but has blazing speed and some power potential, very high ceiling but a long-term project.
15)
16) Jordan Holloway, RHP, Grade C: Age 19, posted 2.91 ERA with 40/36 K/BB in 68 innings in NY-P, 20th round pick in 2014 from high school in Colorado, lanky, projectable, can hit 95 but secondary pitches and command remain very raw. Like White, has a high ceiling but needs time.
17) Justin Jacome, LHP, Grade C: Age 22, fifth round pick from UC Santa Barbara, posted 2.48 ERA with 29/7 K/BB in 33 innings in NY-P. Good debut, could be similar to Lilek but reports aren’t quite as enthusiastic and some believe he will fit better in bullpen.
18) Cody Poteet, RHP, Grade C: Age 22, fourth round pick in 2015 from UCLA, 2.13 ERA with 12/2 K/BB in 13 innings in NY-P. Like Jacome he is an advanced college pitcher who should move through the system quickly but long-term role is unclear at this time. Both will make more rapid impact than Paddack or Holloway but offer less upside. Fantasy owners should view accordingly depending on their needs.
19) Kyle Barraclough, RHP, Grade C: Age 25, acquired from Cardinals for Steve Cisek, posted 2.59 ERA with 30/18 K/BB in 24 major league innings after dominating high minors. Throws hard but needs to lower walk rate to maintain the ERA. Could be good source of filler innings.
20) Brian Ellington, RHP, Grade C: Age 25, 16th round pick in 2012 from West Florida, posted 2.88 ERA in 25 major league innings with 18/13 K/BB. Like Barraclough, he throws hard enough to be a good middle reliever if the command is there.
Richie Shaffer, 1B/3B (TB) Oscar Mercado, SS (STL) Nolan Fontana, 2B/SS (HOU) Riley Ferrell, RHP (HOU) Kevin Ziomek, LHP (DET) Alex Balog, RHP (COL) Trea Turner, SS (WAS) Elvis Escobar, OF (PIT) Brandon Waddell, LHP (PIT)

2018 Top Prospects
Sickels: Alex Verdugo, OF, Grade B+/B (LAD): Age 21, second round pick in 2014; hit .314/.389/.436 against older competition in Triple-A with 52 walks, 50 strikeouts in 433 at-bats; six homers, 27 doubles; hit .172/.240/.304 in 23 major league at-bats; strengths are obvious: feel for hitting, eye at the plate, laser throwing arm; main question continues to revolve around home run/power projection; certainly strong enough to hit more homers but people who understand hitting mechanics better than I do seem skeptical that he’ll ever show more than average pop; given his age I would not give up on the “will show more power” idea just yet; ETA 2018.
Seth Romero, LHP, Grade B (WAS): Age 21, first round pick in 2017 from University of Houston; 4.91 ERA with 35/8 K/BB in 22 innings between Gulf Coast and New York-Penn Leagues; no question about his talent, fastball into mid-90s with plus slider, good change-up, persistently high strikeout rates with good control too; problem is off-the-field stuff as he was kicked off his college team and has a long reputation for maturity problems; hard to know what to make of him just yet but clearly an exciting arm if he can keep his head together. ETA 2020.
Kyle Muller, LHP, Grade B- (ATL): Age 19, second round pick in 2016 from high school in Texas; 4.15 ERA with 49/18 K/BB in 48 innings in Appalachian League, 43 hits; a typical live-armed Braves pitching prospect from the South, fastball 90-94 with more possible, both breaking ball and change-up have plus potential but needs better control, another breakout candidate for ’18 and potential mid-rotation arm. ETA 2021.
