Detroit Tigers Top Prospects
Brett Wallace, 3B, Grade A-: Monster bat should be ready within a year. Glove at third should be adequate in the short run. (TOR)
Casey Crosby, LHP, Grade B+: Has some of the best southpaw stuff in the minors and seems fully recovered from Tommy John. Further command refinements in 2010 would move him into the A- and maybe a pure A category
Chris Withrow, RHP, Grade B+: Needs to improve his command, but stuff is excellent and he was rather inexperienced for the California League. If he lowers the walks and stays healthy, has number one/two potential, but they really need to give him time to sharpen his control and gain experience.
Zach Britton, LHP, Grade B+: Love the grounders, solid strikeout rate, I'm pro-Britton. (BAL)
Jiovanni Mier, SS, Grade B: Borderline B+, but I'd like to get some full-season data first. Well-balanced offensive and defensive prospect. Chance to be a national top 20 prospect a year from now if all goes well. (HOU)
Wilmer Font, RHP, Grade B: Another very high ceiling arm, could be B+ or even A- with another year of development. (TEX)
Michael Main, RHP,Grade B: The numbers don't support this, but he gets an injury mulligan due to the weird virus thing and I believe in his stuff. (TEX)
Jon Niese, LHP, Grade B: I’ve liked him since high school. He’s not an ace but should be a fine inning-eater. (NYM)
Tony Sanchez, C, Grade B: He was a slight overdraft but I like him, excellent defense and it doesn't look like his power was all aluminum. (PIT)
Neftali Soto, 3B, Grade B: Very impressed with his long-term potential. Could use more patience, but strikeout rate isn’t bad and he’s very young. (CIN)
Ryan Strieby, 1B-OF, Grade B-: Love the power bat, but I don't think he'll repeat the .303 average and .427 OBP. Can he really handle left field?
Garrett Gould, RHP, Grade B-: Hard-throwing athletic high school pitcher could follow in the footsteps of Withrow and Martin. Gould burst onto the prospect scene this spring when his fastball jumped to the low 90s, touching 94mph. His curveball is regarded as one of the best in the class. Garrett needs to work on his changeup and fine tune his delivery. (LAD)
Andy Oliver, LHP, Grade B-: We need to see some professional data aside from the Arizona Fall League, but he seems like the kind of pitcher who could be more effective in the pros than in college. Big upside arm
Carlos Gutierrez, RHP, Grade B-: Not going to bet against this guy after the Twins proved to be right about Revere. Ground ball machine. Could rank as high as seventh. (MINN)
Cody Scarpetta, RHP, Grade B-: Has some command issues, but another guy with a good stuff and a good ceiling. (MIL)
Carlos Rivero, SS, Grade B-: I buy into the second half improvement. Want to see more home run power, and faces move to third base. (CLE)
Kyle Weiland, RHP, Grade B-: Much more effective as a pro than in college. (Bos)
Carlos Pimentel, RHP, Grade C+: Another guy who seems underrated to me, could take another step forward in '10. (TEX)
Victor Black, RHP, Grade C+: Another live arm, Dallas Baptist product has high ceiling but needs better control. (PIT)
Casper Wells, OF, Grade C+: Scouts are starting to warm to him. He's produced in Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League, but there will always be skeptics until he hits in the Show. Personally I like the guy.
Daniel Fields, SS, Grade C+: Excellent tools with local Detroit ties, but how raw is he and where does he fit with the glove? Need pro data before ranking higher.
Robbie Weinhardt, RHP, Grade C+: Another relief arm who could help quickly.
Mauricio Robles, LHP, Grade C+: Live-armed lefty acquired in Washburn trade did well in limited action at High Desert. Undersized but interesting. (SEA)
Brayan Villareal, RHP, Grade C+: Sleeper prospect, could rank as high as 10th depending on what you want to emphasize. Need some higher level data but he was great at West Michigan.
Rob Bryson, RHP, Grade C+: Intriguing power arm acquired in Sabathia deal. A bit under the radar but I like him. (CLE)
Mauricio Robles, LHP, Grade C+: Live-armed lefty acquired in Washburn trade did well in limited action at High Desert. Undersized but interesting. (SEA)
Brandon Hicks, SS, Grade C+: Love the power, walks, speed, defense. Hate the strikeouts. (ATL)
Matt McBride, C-OF, Grade C+: Very interesting bat, good plate discipline with power potential, a sleeper for ’09. (CLE)
Jeff Larish, 1B, Grade C+: I don’t buy him as a third baseman, which makes him trade bait. I believe in the power, but won’t hit for average.
Scott Green, RHP, Grade C+ : Another lively high-ceiling power arm from the 2008 draft best-suited for relief work.
Aaron King, LHP, Grade C+: Live-armed lefty needs better command. (SF)
Sean Henry, OF, Grade C+: A bit less speed than Heisey, but with more pop. (CIN)
Casper Wells, OF, Grade C+: Added to 40-man roster after surprisingly good 2008 season, an under the radar guy who produced power and speed.
Rudy Darrow, RHP, Grade C+: Extreme ground ball tendency along with decent strikeout rate, looks like a nice middle reliever.
Casey Fien, RHP, Grade C+: Another relief candidate with a good arm, good command.
Chris Lambert, RHP, Grade C+: Ex-Cardinal prospect revived career after trade, looks like he can be a useful inning-eater type.
Vance Worley, RHP, Grade C+: Very impressive pro debut. (PHI)
Alfredo Figaro, RHP, Grade C: Looks more like a reliever to me than a starter. They have a lot of good material for a pen here.
Luis Marte, RHP, Grade C: Not as effective in Double-A as some expected, but live arm will get him plenty of chances.
Gustavo Nunez, SS, Grade C: hit .315 with 45 steals in the Midwest League, but the scouting reports I have emphasize his rawness.
Melvin Mercedes, RHP, Grade C: Another hard-throwing relief arm, but needs to show he can throw strikes.
Ramon Lebron, RHP, Grade C: Another high-ceiling arm from rookie ball with command issues.
Zach Collier, OF, Grade C: He didn't hit at all last year, but I prefer him to the even rawer Anthony Hewitt at this point.
William Rhymes, 2B, Grade C: Will hit for average, but old for a prospect, looks like a good role player.
Dusty Ryan, C, Grade C: Strong arm, has power, but other than 73 at-bats at Toledo and 44 in Detroit, he’s never been a good hitter.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B, - Excellent five-tool athlete - probably the best overall talent selected by the Red Sox in the 2007 draft. Great baseball frame with very quick wrists. (BOS)
Bryan Morris, RHP, PIT: An aggressive grade from me, but I’m impressed by how well he did one year after TJ surgery. (PIT)
Clark Murphy, 1B/OF, Prospect: Murphy should settle into the organizationally blocked first base position as he moves up. Look for Murphy to emerge as one of the better young power hitters in the system. He has a mature approach for a young hitter and has the power potential to become a very dangerous offensive threat. (TEX)
Carlos A Moncrief: With Moncrief it is all about power as he routinely hits 96 MPH with his fastball and has the arm strength where he is expected to add even more velocity to his fastball down the road. He also throws a slider and changeup, with the slider a more advanced pitch with the potential to be a second plus pitch for him and a dominating strikeout pitch at the major league level. He also has a good feel for his changeup. (CLE)
Jason Place, OF, Bos
Reynaldo Navarro, SS, Ari
Dan Stange, SP, Ari
Chris Hicks, RHP (Hou)
