TOP PROSPECTS
Julio Urias, P, LAD (A): Age 18, posted 2.36 ERA with 109/37 K/BB in 88 innings in High-A, 60 hits. That’s the offense-heavy California League and he was just 17 years old most of the season. Velocity continues upward, excellent curve, excellent change, strong command, strong mound presence, a unique talent.
David Dahl, OF, COL (B+/A-): Age 20, hit .309/.347/.500 with 18 steals for Low-A Asheville in 392 at-bats then .267/.296/.467 in 120 at-bats for High-A Modesto. Nice rebound after lost 2013 season, impressive power/speed/defense combination. Holding back a tiny bit on the grade due to slippage in zone judgment at higher level plus statistical distortions from the Asheville park. Still an elite prospect even with those factors.
Daniel Robertson, SS, TBR (B+/B): Age 20, acquired from Athletics in Ben Zobrist trade, hit .310/.402/./471 with 37 doubles, 15 homers, 72 walks, 94 strikeouts in 548 at-bats in High-A. On-base player with doubles power, questions here are defense (he is likely to be second baseman in the long run, especially with other prospects in this system) and power projection at the highest levels (it is always best to confirm Cal League numbers elsewhere). Projects as a regular.
Christian Arroyo, SS/2B, SFG (B): Drafted in the first round in 2013 from high school in Florida, Arroyo opened 2014 with Low-A Augusta but was overmatched. Sent down to Salem-Keizer in June, he rebounded quickly and was one of the top hitters in the league, hitting for average and solid power and posting a +20 percent OPS, wRC+135. He played second base at Augusta and was very effective; he was the shortstop at Salem-Keizer and wasn’t bad, though his tools likely fit best at second in the long run. Scouts love Arroyo’s bat and most consider the slow start at Augusta an aberration. His makeup is rated very highly and while his athletic tools are considered “merely” decent, his feel for the game is excellent and helps everything plays up.
Ben Lively, P, PHI (B): Age 22, acquired from Reds for Marlon Byrd, posted 3.04 ERA with 171/52 K/BB in 151 innings, 117 hits between High-A and Double-A. Low-90s fastball, slider, curve, change, none of his pitches are outstanding but they are all solid and he usually throws strikes. Deceptive but repeatable delivery plays everything up. Number three starter potential and a personal favorite for this analyst.
Derek Hill, OF, DET (B-): Age 19, 2014 first-round pick hit very poorly in debut with .208/.296/.295 mark in 47 games in short-season ball. Weak hitting reportedly caused by a back injury. Draws notice for excellent defense and across-the-board tools. Too early to know how those tools will actually play on offense.
Scott Schebler, OF, LAD (B-): Age 24, hit .280/.365/.556 with 23 doubles, 14 triples, 28 homers, 10 steals, 45 walks, 110 strikeouts in 489 at-bats in Double-A. Good set of physical tools and skills have improved steadily, still questions about strike zone judgment/contact against the best pitching but broad skill base will help. Trade bait?
Darnell Sweeney, INF, LAD (B-): Age 24, .288/.387/.463 in Double-A with 34 doubles, 14 homers, 77 walks, 117 strikeouts in 490 at-bats. Toolsy switch-hitter showing power increases and much improved strike zone judgment, runs well but very inefficient as a stealer (15 steals but caught 16 times), still refining erratic glovework.
Julian Leon, C,LAD (B-/C+): Age 19, Mexican catcher signed at same time as Urias, hit .332/.420/.565 with 12 homers, 31 walks, 53 strikeouts in 223 at-bats in Pioneer League. Reports on bat are very positive, pointing to power and relatively refined approach. Reports on defensive tools are mixed but results are okay so far, threw out 30% with low error and passed ball rates for context. Will have to see about the glove but highly promising bat.
Alex Yarbrough, 2B, LAA (C+): Alex Yarbrough’s physical toolset isn’t spectacular. His arm is nothing special, nor his range, nor his power, nor his speed. Even his plate discipline isn’t too hot, with consistently un-ideal BB/K/PA ratios. Still, he always manages to keep his batting average up, he hits doubles, and he is very reliable with the glove in terms of avoiding errors and miscues. The lack of range limits his utility as a bench player of course and I’m not sure he’ll hit enough to be a regular. However, it wouldn’t take much of an improvement in his strike zone judgment to change that.
Chris Reed, P, LAD (C+): Age 24, posted 3.22 ERA with 111/55 K/BB in 137 innings in Double-A but was crushed after moving up to Triple-A (10.97 ERA, 37 hits in 21 innings). Good low-90s sinker but slider and change-up didn’t work too well against advanced hitting in PCL environment, granted sample was small. Back-end starter or reliever projection.
Aramis Garcia, C, SF (C+): Age 21, second-round pick from Florida International University thrived in college (.368/.442/.626) but hit just .225/.301/.343 in his first 28 pro games. Defense is just OK so he needs to hit. Used an all-field approach in college but was more pull-oriented after signing.
Sam Selman, P, KC (C+): Borderline C. Age 24, posted 3.87 ERA with 87/49 K/BB in 93 innings in Double-A. Lively arm from left side, fastball in the 90s with life but secondary pitches and command remain erratic. Even small improvement in command would get him a big league trial or make him an attractive trade chip.
Yimi Garcia, P, LAD (C+): Age 24, another solid relief option, 3.10 ERA with 69/18 K/BB in 61 innings in Triple-A, 1.80 ERA with 9/1 K/BB in 10 big league innings. Nothing left to prove in the minors.
John Richy, P, LAD (C+): Age 22, third round pick last year out of UNLV, posted 3.74 ERA with 31/11 K/BB in 34 innings in debut, solid three-pitch mix, could advance rapidly as Ross Stripling did until his injury.
Onelki Garcia, P, CHI-AL (C+): Seems ideally-suited for relief work with power stuff from the left side, assuming he makes a little more progress with his command and that his elbow is OK.
Pedro Baez, P, LAD (C+): Age 26, former third baseman took well to pitching, 3.86 ERA with 38/13 K/BB in 42 innings in high minors, 2.63 ERA with 18/5 K/BB in 24 innings in majors. Big league results are no fluke, he has the stuff and control is quite good especially for someone just new to the mound.
Victor Arano, P, LAD (C+): Another product of Dodgers renewed efforts in Mexico, posted 4.20 ERA with 49/13 K/BB in 49 innings in Arizona Rookie League, showing big league arm strength and decent command at age 18. Long way off and he shouldn’t be expected to duplicate Urias, but still interesting.
Zach Borenstein, OF, ARI (C): The California League MVP in 2013, he opened the season for the Angels in Double-A and played well enough to earn a promotion to Triple-A, where he scuffled for a month. Traded to Arizona for Joe Thatcher at mid-summer, he was sent back down to Double-A for a month with Mobile, then moved back to the PCL with Reno for August. The roster jumping obscures his season but overall he hit .258/.320/.432 with 15 homers, 43 walks, 125 strikeouts in 461 at-bats, wRC+ composite of 107. That’s not great compared to the destruction he wrought in the Cal League, but it keeps him in the picture as a potential role bat. He’s got some power and seems like the type who would produce a “surprise” season in the age 26-27 window.
Blake Taylor, P, NYM (C): Blake Taylor was Pittsburgh’s second round pick in 2013 out of high school in Dana Point, California. He was traded to the Mets last July as part of the Ike Davis deal. A classically-built lefty, he hit 94 MPH in high school but hasn’t done that as a pro, working at 87-90 last year. The Pirates took his curveball away as part of their “fastball command” pitching development program, but the Mets (who have a less dogmatic approach) gave it back to him. He had problems with the curve and posted some pretty ugly K/BB numbers in the Appalachian League, but the raw physical material for success is still here. It will be interesting to see how the Mets handle him but I’d have to think he will open 2015 in short-season ball.

This should be my list of draftees since 2009, in addition to some other players in the Dodgers system that I like. When I do the work to figure out who else is in my system, the names below should be claimed by other teams. If there is anyone that I am missing, please let me know.
