White Sox would like to resign Yasiel Puig OF/LAD .
He presents a conundrum, but he is a good player with loads of potential. My concern is not for his potential but his playing time, but if I can resign him I want too. He just finished a 3 year FA contract for 4.2M and I based on his potential and age I know I will need to give him a raise.
I am offering a new 4 year contract for 7M a year.
Puig played 79 games in 15, played 148 games in 14 and played 104 games in 13.
Braun just signed for 9M and played 140 games in 15, 135 games in 14 and 61 games in 13.
Brantley just signed for 22 and played 137 games in 15, 156 games in 14 and 151 games in 13.
Cain will probably go for 7.5M and he played 140 games in 15, 133 in 14 and 115 in 13.

Agreed that Puig is one of the toughest players to value, and it's even harder because the outfield comps make valuation more complicated. The magical "$8 million" outfielder is Cruz, Werth (twice), Beltran, Pence, and BJ Upton. Puig's track record is shorter than the others, but I think he belongs in that tier based on age, potential, and despite a limited track record it's pretty damn good. Perhaps you could mitigate the risk of a slightly higher salary by offering less years, but less than $8 million/year for Puig would set a bad precedent IMO.

A very very hard player to figure. Will he live up to the hype or be a Dayan Viciedo? Not sure here, so when in doubt I look at the stats. His average and OPS have fallen each year he has been in the league. Still young though and based on his potential I guess is the reason he's being offered 7M. His 2015 numbers aren't elite at all.
Yasiel Puig: The stats we use: (r, hr, rbi, sb, avg, ops)
2013 - 66 19 42 11 .319 .925 (at bats - 382) 2014 - 92 16 69 11 .296 .863 (at bats - 558) 2015 - 30 11 38 3 .255 .758 (at bats - 282)

Here is a grid of production by the players I am judging Puig on, if he leads any category for these players it is only by a slim margin. If we are basing contracts on production I have Puig contract correct based on the other production numbers below. If we are making contracts based on potential I do not think I can afford him.
Stats are from Frantrax and they are for 3 years.
Season GP AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS Avg OPS Puig 331 1222 188 359 70 14 46 149 129 287 25 18 0.290 0.849 CAIN 388 1421 210 411 84 13 25 171 94 296 70 17 0.286 0.749 Brantley 444 1696 228 522 116 5 45 254 152 174 55 6 0.307 0.826 Braun 336 1261 185 352 71 11 53 203 122 284 39 14 0.283 0.833

I'm good with the 7 million a year. Much like Soler playing time could be the biggest issue. That and the guy is a bit of a whack job that seems to have a tendency to get hurt. This could end up being a 7 million dollar a year player that only logs 350 AB's.

Denied (2-2)
I have to agree with Mets here. The potential is just too great to let get go so cheaply.

Guys like this are so hard. I think there is plenty of risk for Puig both on and off the field.
I am going to barely approve this.
