Mets wish to resign Adrian Gonzalez. Previous contract - $15,000,000 (2016)
This is a tough one to establish value. A-Gon is respected as a dependable and consistent contributor, yet he will be 35 years old when the 2017 season begins. In scouring the re-signed players there are no good comps for A-Gon at first base so I have to look at age/production comps. My closest comps for age are (age at re-sign) -
Carlos Beltran - $8,000,000 (2014 NTC) (2016) 36 Jayson Werth - $8,000,000 (2015) 32
Guys you would think of as old were actually under 30 when re-signed (McCann, Youk, Prado, etc.). Beltran was showing no signs of aging at 36, and while the inevitable happened to Werth he was also looking pretty good at 32. Here's the last 5 years of A-Gon (AVG/OBP/SLG/WAR) -
.299 .344 .463 3.6 .293 .342 .461 2.9 .276 .335 .482 3.6 .275 .350 .480 3.1 .285 .349 .435 1.3
I kind of feel crazy for wanting to resign him despite the obvious dropoff that is coming, but goddamnit it's Adrian Gonzalez. My assessment is that A-Gon still puts the bat on the ball, but his power is declining as are his legendary fielding skills (-11.8 defensive WAR last year). The latter will not come back. What good is a 36 year old at first who can't field for an NL team? I think he's got 1 productive year left and is destined for a DH runaround to end his glorious career (best Mexican ML player of all time). All that said I would go a little under Beltran who had more flexibility in his future role as a Yankee.
3 years @ $7,500,000 or $7,500,000 (2019).

Approval #1
(went with he age and declining skills factors. One example was Gonzalez had a .784 OPS (we use here)last year. For comparison, the Red Sox here lead our league with a team OPS of .840. Combine that with Gonzalez' 18 HR's last year from the 1B position, to me he just looks like a player that'll leave you right in the middle of the pack anymore.)

Approve #2 This one is boarderline, as Gonzalez is still above average but declining in skills. I am approving only based on age as I have more than 7.5M invested in him in other leagues.
