Nelson Cruz coming off his age 33 and 34 seasons last year in which he hit 40 and 44 home runs was signed to a 9.5 million contract (LM-Marlins mentioned in his review that 8 million would have been enough).
Edwin Encarnacion is coming off of his age 32 and 33 seasons in which he hit 39 and 42 home runs. Thus the power hitters are very similar in productions, BUT Encarnacion is leaving a hitters ballpark and going to cleveland and leaving a lineup where he had five power hitters protecting him (Donaldson, Bautista, Saunders, Tulo and Martin all hit over 20 HR's) to a lineup that only has Kipnis and Santana.
Also Encarnacion has had an alarming trend of an increase in K's each year over the last four years
2013: 62 2014: 82 2015: 98 2016: 138
1. Leaving a hitters park 2. Losing all the protection that the Blue Jays lineup afforded him 3. Entering into his age 34 season 4. His alarming strikeout rise in recent years (a sign of a bat which is slowing down)
All lead me to believe that this is a player whose contract should not be RAISED. Because of his nearly identical stats to Nelson Cruz entering Cruz' contract last year I would have suggested the exact same contract as Cruz but Encarnacion actually has environment issues which will DECREASE his production this year.
For all the reasons I have stated I offer to keep Encarnacion at his same contract level and sign him for three years for a total of 27 million dollars.
1B - Edwin Encarnacion - 9.0 Million (2017 NTC) (2019)
