SP Verlander was at $14 million (2016) for his last contract
Verlander is clearly an elite pitcher and we want to resign him as a franchise original! He was one of the top pitchers last year after a subpar injury season in 2015. While Verlander was one of the MLB's best last year he is approaching 34 and I do not believe he is in Bumgarner, Sale category.
I thought the Strasburg $11 million contract was a decent comp figuring that Strasburg was coming off TJ and is a similar power pitcher. Strasburg is almost seven years younger than Verlander so I think a meaningful discount in order from that contract. I figured 15% to 20% discount off Strasburg for a 3 year commitment to the 34 year old Verlander.
My offer is 3 years at $9.1 million a year = $27.3 million

I have to think about this one he is still elite SP and your only going 3-yrs and he was the runner up in the AL Cy Young last year.

Other SP in the $9 mil range:
Carlos Carrasco - $9 Mil (2016) -- 29 Doug Fister - $9 Mil (2014) -- 30 Jeff Samardzijia - $9 Mil (2015) -- 30 Jordan Zimmerman - $10.5 Mil (2015) -- 28 YO Felix Hernandez - $12.5 (2016) - 29 YO Justin Verlander - 33
3-Yr AVG Before Re-Sign
Jordan Zimmerman 32 GS 15 W 204.5 IP 3.19 ERA 1.12 WHIP Felix Hernandez 32 GS 15 W 213.8 IP 2.90 ERA 1.07 WHIP Justin Verlander 29 GS 12 W 188.8 IP 3.65 ERA 1.16 WHIP
While Verlander is 3-4 yrs older than these pitchers I also think he is way better than Carlos Carrasco, Jeff S, and Doug Fister who were re-signed for $9 million so he should be paid more than $100k more than they are making.
Due to age I might be willing to take a mil discount on what Zimmerman got so I would likely be seeking at least $9.5 mil on a 3-yr deal.

Agree with Marlins reasoning there. If it weren't for Verlander's age, he could easily go for 10.5 - 11M.
Thanks Tigers for the Strasburg comp there. Those are very helpful when looking at these.

Deny #3, looks like 9.5 to 10M is where you need to be.

Ok - all valid reasoning and in line with what I was thinking minus a larger discount I was applying to his age and my skepticism that last year was more his new norm versus the two years before that one. He is a bit of a wild card bc of his age and while last year he was elite, his years before that were not elite. But the reasoning put forth by the TABs is sound and is not so far from where I started so I will revise and resubmit.
Offer 2 on Justin Verlander - 3 years at $9.5 million = $28.5
