Mets wish to re-sign JD Martinez, previous contract - $300,000 (2016)
New offer - 4 years @ $8,000,000
Best comps I could come up with from valuable, talented, and roughly 30 year old guys that are just below the upper echelon -
Pablo Sandoval - $8,500,000 (NTC 2014)(2018) Yoenis Cespedes - $11,700,000 (2016 NTC) (2018) Edwin Encarnacion - $9,000,000 (2017 NTC)(2019) Evan Longoria - $8,000,000 (2017 NTC)(2020) Justin Turner - $7,500,000 (2017 NTC)(2020)
and their production when re-signed (AVG/OBP/SLG/HR/OWAR)
Pablo Sandoval - .278 / .341 / .417 / 14 / 3.8 Yoenis Cespedes - .291 / .328 / .542 / 35 / 31.0 Edwin Encarnacion - .263 / .357 / .529 / 42 / 26.9 Evan Longoria - .273 / .318 / .521 / 36 / 18.8 Justin Turner - .275 / .339 / .493 / 27 / 18.6
JD Martinez (2016) - .307 / .373 / .535 / 22 / 22.8
I included HR and offensive WAR as we don't count defense and HR is the counting stat these guys provide. The question with JD is track record and health. Yes he's had 3 good seasons in a row, but also missed 40 games in 2 of those seasons and only played 86 the year before when he was cut in Houston. I started out thinking 9mm/year, but think his talent is more in line with Longo and Turner than Encarnacion.

Approval #1
Looking at his 6 year track record, he was released by the Astros after year 3. He did well in his year #4 in only 123 games. Year #5, he seemed to be great proving year #4 wasn't a fluke. Then in year #6, he only plays in 120 games. I'll go with if he was a 9 or 10M player here, I probably wouldn't have just wrote that about them. 4 years at 160 games played, its a great deal most likely. 4 years at 120 games played, not so much.

Approval #2, without injuries he would be a definate 10M dollar man.
