Blue Jays Send: 3B Hunter Dozier (KC) RHP Robert Tyler (COL)
Mariners Send: 2B Brad Miller (TB) $300,000 (2018)
Jays accept. Originally we thought Miller had retained his SS eligibility which was the reason Seattle contacted me with the offer. Even without the eligibility I felt it was an acceptable trade for a year rental on Miller who I think can bounce back somewhat and gives me infield depth for this year.
Dozier and Tyler are inherited players that I don't have a ton of interest in and would not own if I was in control of the team when they were acquired. Dozier has a lot of pop but K's a lot and doesn't walk too much. Tyler is a 2 pitch reliever (though they're two good pitchers) but hasn't been healthy since he was drafted and his upside is limited by his organization. I felt these were a fair return for a one year rental on a bounce back candidate.
Thanks to the Mariners for the easy negotiations.
How they were acquired:
Hunter Dozier - trade with LAD in 2015) Robert Tyler - 2016 FYPD 2.20
Brad Miller - Originally selected by the Mariners in the 2011 Amateur Draft

As stated above I thought Miller still had SS eligibility and knew Blue Jays need a SS. I have Ketel Marte and all my eggs are in that basket. I also have 2B depth with Taylor, Kipnis and Gennett. This made Miller expendable, which is unfortunate because I could definitely see a bounce back campaign from him. However my need for OF depth is what made me key in on Dozier who I feel has a similar skill set to Miller (low avg, big pop) but at different positions (currently 3B, could add 1B and OF). If I knew Dozier was going to get ABs this year I would have offered the deal straight up however that and his age, 26, are big question marks. Will his skills translate to the big leagues?
This is why I requested Robert Tyler in the deal as well. He has a big arm but has been injured frequently and only has 7 professional innings since being drafted. However he does have a high ceiling with development on his curve to be a starter or even a good bullpen piece. Two things that I am lacking in my organization. Therefore I wanted to take a flyer on him.
Sorry I'm long-winded but all this to say, Mariners accept.
