Orioles accept. Taking the cap dumps since I need to fill out my roster anyway. Have plenty of cap space still. Vargas is an intriguing prospect who I hope can eventually make it to the bigs.

I am not sure I understand or am on board with this trade. Vargas was a top 10 prospect for the Dbacks 1 year ago (https://www.azsnakepit.com/2019/1/25/18197755/diamondbacks-top-prospect-10-rhp-emilio-vargas) and Rick Zagone hasn't pitched at any level in 5 years? Salary dumps happen over and over here [see most Brewers trades ] but there is always some value trading hands and in this case Dbacks already have $43mil in cap space. At this point I am a "no" but given that both are new GMs I don't want to make you think the league is unfair, so can you please restate why this deal makes sense?

While I do have a lot of appreciation for SB Nation sites, they typically do not have the same level of access/analysis as some of the larger/more mainstream sites so I don't generally put as much value on their analysis. I generally trend towards Fangraphs, MLB.com, and Baseball America when developing my ranking composite for players on my team. Fangraphs had Vargas at 35 in the ARZ org in 2019 with a 40 FV (C+) and doesn't have him on their 2020 board. MLB.com also doesn't have him as a top 30 prospect in the ARZ system in their most up to date rankings. If you review my personal rankings (which are not 100% set in stone I'll admit), I have him as my 58th best prospect. In my opinion, he is the definition of a flyer spec. Worth eating some cap in a rebuilding year to acquire, but not a guy that I foresee ever making my roster. As far as the return goes. I requested "A non-entity prospect" from Orioles so that he would at least be sending me something for the deal, but the return to me doesn't really have any bearing on the trade. I view my team as set up strongly to contend for this season and ideally for many more. $43 million in cap space will help with that contention, and having $7 million more could mean the difference in missing out or successfully acquiring a piece in free agency that pushes my team into the championship. Well worth the price paid of a flyer spec.

DBacks basically paid a spec to dump a bunch of cap. Vargas isn't a highly regarded spec I just checked FanGraphs DBacks specs and he was no where in their Top 47 for 2020. He was #23 last year for DBacks via FG so his value has clearly slipped some.
Sure Rick Zagone is no longer currently in baseball but is he so different than someone who is and is getting bad results?
I would have preferred a legit lotto ticket to take back the cap but I don't think personally it makes this vetoable because you can't just ignore the cap ramification for Orioles either.

I understand the intent of this trade and think it is fair based on value returned to each GM. That said, Rick Zagone is at the moment the District Sales and Marketing Manager at Santana Equipment in Mchenry, IL and would probably feel really weird for me knowing that! He works close enough that I could request an IRL meeting for his thoughts on this trade and if I acted like I needed to rent a skid steer it would probably happen. I cannot vote in favor of a trade for a fantasy player that does not exist. Why not ask for a bag of chips or a pack of smokes? No on principle, yes on value.
Cap is not an issue for either team who are between $43mm and $76mm of the cap.

I looked at this trade a couple of times, since it was posted. Bottom line: If a couple of the free agents that were traded by the Dbacks play this year, the Orioles will have gained position players (while losing almost all of the salary dump, at the end of this season). Dbacks in turn, achieve cap space. This would benefit both teams, even if a returned player was not included.
