Orioles send:
Harrison Bader (not called up but passed threshold in 2018 so 2023 would be his contract date)
Mariners Send:
Noelvi Marte (spec)
Ljay Newsome (spec)
Rationale:
After coming up just short in the World Series last year I'm looking to retool my roster. Losing guys like Taylor and Melky, while not being amazing are great role players. I usually try to find these in Free Agency but I'd like to be a little more proactive in finding some guys that can stick more long term. Bader is a guy whose tools I have always like but he has yet to put it together offensively and might be running out of chances (at least in St. Louis). But I expect him to get a good chunk of playing time for his defense alone and I still like the skills.
Getting a controllable guy like this comes at the cost of an 18 year old SS with a 50/50 hit and power tools and 70 speed. Could end up being a stud but he's at least 2-3 years away and I need to win now. Newsome's strength is his control and he could easily be a back end innings eater type guy in the majors so he's definitely more than a throw-in but not a big name either.
TL:DR two young specs for the rebuilding team and a controllable role player for one hoping to win it all.
How they were acquired:
Ljay Newsome was drafted by the M's in the 26th round of the 2015 Amateur draft - www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=newson000lja
Noelvi Marte was a 2018 international signing from the DR - www.mlb.com/mariners/press-release/mariners-announce-international-signings-283959776
Harrison Bader was drafted here by the O's in the 3rd round of the 2015 FYPD - bigs.freeforums.net/thread/1132/2015-fypd-draft-completed
